Grass Pollen Causing Miserable Allergies Across the Country

 May and June bring grass pollen to many parts of the country. Grass pollen is a major cause of nasal allergy symptoms, often because grass pollinates for very brief periods of time -- and therefore in very large amounts. Grass allergy can manifest as nasal and eye allergies, asthma, skin rashes and even food allergies. 

The Different Symptoms of Grass Allergies 
Grass pollen is known to cause a variety of different allergic reactions. Grass pollen is present in the air in the late spring and early summer months, which can cause allergic rhinitisallergic conjunctivitis and asthma. Direct skin contact with grass, from sitting in the grass or mowing the lawn, can cause itching of the skin -- urticaria and atopic dermatitis. Grass allergy can also be associated with the fruit pollen syndrome resulting in food allergies to tomatoes, potatoes and peaches.

The Latest Treatments for Grass Pollen Allergy 
In 2014, the FDA has approved two new products for the treatment of grass pollen allergy. These products, called Oralair and Grastek, are sublingual immunotherapy tablets. Both exist as an oral disintegrating tablet that is placed and held under the tongue. The tablets are taken daily until the end of the pollen season, although in the case of Grastek, can also be taken continuously for a total of 3 years.
