Reflecting on Grace By Martha D'Adamo
As I thought about this, I realized that what feels more appropriate this year is to reflect on grace, as I believe that during transition times - and non-transition times - we have the opportunity to experience grace if we open ourselves up to it. To me, grace is what happens when life unfolds and I get out of the way and allow it to happen. This doesn't mean that all of life is good or happy per se; rather it is having the capacity to accept with equanimity the events of my life. At times, it may not be what is expected, but it is always what is needed. Friedrich Schiller, the German poet and philosopher, described grace as "the beauty of form under the influence of freedom." I think that when we are free from all the supposed to's, have to's, or expectations of what we should be doing, we experience a certain "flow" in our lives. And to me, that is grace. | |

For the last few years, as December arrived, I've written about year-end traditions, endings and beginnings, and setting goals for the New Year. 2013 has been a year of many endings and beginnings, and I have had to embrace on a regular basis the letting goes that I normally associate with the end of the calendar year with a newfound sense of agility and fluidness.
