Calcium and magnesium are minerals that play important roles in keeping your body functioning effectively and they need each other to do so. That is way most supplements containing calcium will also contain magnesium. Calcium actually needs magnesium to be effectively absorbed. When these essential minerals are put together, they complement each other and provide a variety of important benefits for our bodies. For example, calcium primarily causes the contraction of muscles and vessels while magnesium primarily helps with relaxation of muscles. When calcium & magnesium are in balance, the muscles are able to relax, contract and create their own activity. Magnesium may actually be more important than calcium if you are going to consider supplementing. However, maintaining an appropriate calcium-to-magnesium ratio is important regardless. Research on the paleolithic or caveman diet has shown that the ratio of calcium to magnesium in the diet that our bodies evolved to eat is 1-to-1. Most supplements on the market today offer twice as much calcium as magnesium. According to Carolyn Dean, MD,ND The 2:1 ratio is based on a mistaken translation from French researcher Jean Durlach, who said "never go beyond two parts calcium to one part magnesium in your food, water, or supplement intake combined". This was misinterpreted as meaning a 2:1 ratio was an appropriate ratio, which it's not. A more appropriate ratio of calcium to magnesium is 1:1. Magnesium is as important or more important than calcium for maintaining and building bones. See my newsletter on Bone Health. Are you magnesium deficient? Take the test in
