From Laura Dolson, your Guide to Low Carb Diets

There was interesting research in the news last week, showing preliminary evidence that artificial sweeteners - at least some of them, and at least in high amounts, could have an effect on our gut flora that may even contribute to glucose intolerance in some people.  As I said, this is very far from proved, but it does make me want to urge people to try to get away from eating too much in the way of sweet foods.  There is also evidence that sweet foods may "hook" our brains, making us want more.

That said, I don't think this means that we should never eat anything sweet.  I do think it does mean that weaning ourselves away from lots of sweet foods as a regular feature of our diets is a wise move, for many reasons.  I've found that most manufactured sweet foods taste way too sweet to me now, and it doesn't take all that long to retrain our taste buds.

Moral: Use sweeteners sparingly and wisely.  Laura

How to Cut Down on Sugar

Most people eat quite a lot of sugar.  If you're still one of them, here are some tips for cutting back.  See also:

Is Coconut Sugar Low-Carb?

"It's low-glycemic!"  "It's great for people on low-carb diets!"  "It's a wonder-sweetener!" Coconut sugar is quickly supplanting agave syrup as the latest "natural" sugar.  I tried to get beyond the hype and get to the truth about coconut sugar.

What is Erythritol?

Erythritol is the sugar alcohol with the least impact on blood sugar. Because it is expensive, I tend to limit myself to using it when I'm making candy or other items with chocolate, as I find it really improves the result.  See Also:

Low-Carb Honey Cake for Rosh Hashanah

Sweet foods do have their place occasionally, and this is one of them: It's the Jewish New Year the week, and one of the traditions is to serve honey to wish people a sweet year.  I'm always asked to bring this honey cake to my friend's celebration each year.  At other times, I leave the honey out and just serve it as a nice spice cake (my husband likes it as his birthday cake).
