I see many people in my clinic who believe that food allergies are responsible for their nasal symptoms. This is a common misconception among people, especially with milk. People believe that a milk allergy is the reason why they have symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion and mucus in the throat. In reality, however, food allergies are an extremely rare cause of isolated allergic rhinitis or asthma symptoms.

This is a common misconception among people, especially with milk. People believe that a milk allergy is the reason why they have symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion and mucus in the throat. In reality, however, food allergies are an extremely rare cause of isolated allergic rhinitis or asthma symptoms. | | Daniel More, MD Allergies Expert | | | Nasal Symptoms Caused By Food Allergies | The majority of people with food allergies experience some type of skin reaction, such as itching, urticaria (hives), swelling (angioedema), flushing or eczema. It is certainly possible that other symptoms can occur in addition to these skin symptoms, including gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea), respiratory symptoms (sneezing, nasal congestion, wheezing and coughing), and cardiovascular symptoms (lightheadedness, low blood pressure). | | | Nasal Symptoms Caused by Foods is (Usually) Intolerance | Approximately 4% of all people suffer from food allergies, but many more people have adverse reactions to foods that don’t represent a true allergy. These people actually suffer from food intolerance, which represents a cause-and-effect relationship between eating a certain food and having symptoms, but an allergic reaction doesn’t occur. A true food allergy involves the presence of allergic antibody (IgE) against the food, which causes the release of chemicals (such as histamine) from allergic cells (such as mast cells and basophils). | | | Oral Allergy Syndrome is (an Exception!) Caused by Food Allergies | The oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is caused by cross-reactivity between proteins in fresh fruits and vegetables and pollens. This syndrome occurs in a large number (up to 70 percent) of people with pollen allergy, resulting in itchy mouth and throat, but may also include sneezing and itchy nose and eyes. The proteins in the fruits and vegetables causing OAS are easily broken down with cooking or processing. Therefore, the OAS typically does not occur with cooked or baked fruits and vegetables, or processed fruits such as in applesauce. | | | | | | You are receiving this newsletter because you subscribed to the Allergies newsletter.
