Today's takeaway

"The proposal’s focus on serving sizes, added sugars and nutrients like vitamin D and potassium reflects the recognition of drastic changes that have occurred in the American diet and represents an effort to halt the rapid development of serious chronic diseases connected to the way we eat.”

About Today: War on Films

About

With the 86th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday evening, we've got movies on our minds as we head into the weekend. But even as we root for some of the year's biggest blockbusters and indie flicks, we can't help but notice at least one movie genre MIA in the list of nominees. That's why today's mission is to honor a group of films (and an entire About.com site!) that doesn't always get the love at the box office it often deserves.

War Movies: The Rules of Engagement
According to Johnny Rico, the About.com War Movies Expert, war films have a certain moral expectation and responsibility that other genres of cinema do not share. That's why he created the four major rules of war films that filmmakers should abide by when presenting these historical conflicts to the world audience.

Of course, in war and in film, there are winners and there are losers. These 12 films are the losers as the weakest in the war movies genre. Sorry, Ben Affleck, but we're calling out Pearl Harbor in this one.

Would you like some toast with breakfast or a slice of banana bread with cream cheese or a muffin as  snack?  Look no further!  Have a great weekend - Laura

Low-Carb Banana Bread

I developed this recipe for a friend who's father was diagnosed with diabetes and missed banana bread.  It's about 6 grams of net carb per slice -- higher than some of my other recipes because it has actual banana in it, but way lower than most banana breads.

Flax Meal Bread

This is one of my most popular recipes. It is easy to make - just mix it up and bake it flat in a sheet pan. Each piece has less than a gram of usable carb, plus 5 grams of fiber. Breakfast idea: a piece of flax toast topped with a little cheese, bacon or ham, and a couple of eggs on top. There's also a link to a video to show you how to make it.

Coconut Blueberry Muffins

These are made with coconut flour and are great with raspberries or blueberries.  Yes, the amount of eggs is not a typo!

Raspberry Cream Cheese Coffee Cake

Again, this can be made with blueberries or raspberries. It has a cake layer, a cream cheese layer, and streusel on top. Made with almond meal.
