 What is a fad diet anyway?  You might think it's something that comes and goes quickly, but avoiding starches and sugars for health and weight control is an idea that has been around for at least 150 years.  So when do we get to be not a fad??  Things are slowly changing, but last year I was distressed to see that a major medical journal was still running with the "fad" nonsense, so I couldn't hold back!  Have a great week - Laura

Many people still refer to low-carb diets as "fad diets". Here is my response to two psychologists who wrote an opinion piece for the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Low-Carb is Safe and Effective

 One of the research papers cited by the authors of the JAMA piece as showing that it doesn't make a difference how much carb you eat was this one. Which, actually, showed that there is quite a difference.  It looked at 17 studies of low-carb eating, and analyzed the results.


Almonds for Health and Nutrition

 I use almond meal a lot in baking, for muffins and cookies, and I often put a few raw almonds in my pocket in case I get caught out in the late afternoon and need a bit of a snack.  Almonds can be a great friend to low-carbers!

Low-Cost Low-Carb

 A lot of people find they spend more on groceries when eating low-carb, but it really needn't be that way. One thing I've been doing recently is cutting back some on protein and adding more fat. (Of course, I make sure I'm getting enough protein.) It turns out that calorie for calorie, fats are less expensive.
