Do You Always Need Medication to Control Heartburn?

There are plenty of television ad that tell us that heartburn control can only be achieved y this or that company's product. Probably all of us have at least one friend or family member who expounds the wonders of the medication she or he is taking. But is it really true that only by taking medications, such as antacids, H2 blockers, or proton pump inhibitors, can you find relief from heartburn? What Are Proton Pump Inhibitors?

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of medications that have been used to decrease the amount of acid in the stomach and intestines. Doctors prescribe PPIs to treat people with GERD, ulcers in the stomach or intestine, or other digestive disorders where the production of stomach acid needs to be controlled. What Are H2 Blockers?

H2 blockers, which are also called H2-receptor antagonists, are medicines used to reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces. The H2-blockers block histamine's ability to bind to one kind of histamine receptor on cells: the histamine-2 receptor. Learn what H2 blockers are and what they do.
