5 Reasons Why a Cough Doesn’t Go Away
Cough is the most common reason why people go to their primary doctor. Most often, a cough only lasts for a short period of time – such as a couple of weeks – and is most likely related to an upper respiratory tract infection (URI), such as the common cold. In this case, the cough has lasted less than 3 weeks, and is termed an “acute cough”. In some cases, a cough can last for many weeks to months – or even longer. A cough that persists for more than 8 weeks is termed a chronic cough.

All About Coughing
The cause of a cough is dependent upon how long the symptom has been present. For example, the causes of an acute cough may be quite different from the causes of a chronic cough. In at least 25% of cases of a chronic cough, there are at least 2 medical conditions causing the cough in the person.

Post Nasal Drip
Post nasal drip can be caused by allergies, among other things. There are many causes of post nasal drip, or phlegm in the throat, which causes many people to frequently clear their throats. Causes of post nasal drip include allergic rhinitis, non-allergic rhinitis, and sinusitis. In addition, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may mimic post nasal drip.
