Specifically, people who sleep less than 5 hours per night and more than 8 hours per night were found to have an 83 percent and 74 percent higher risk of stroke, respectively. Most strokes are triggered by a blood clot in the brain, and they’re relatively common: about 800,000 people each year have a stroke in the U.S., and it’s a leading cause of disability.
