How To Manage Stress

From Elizabeth Scott, M.S., your Guide to Stress Management

Many of us "gained" an extra hour this weekend through Daylight Saving Time.  This day of the year always feels fantastic to me because several times during the coming week, I will invariably feel like I have extra time, something I often wish for.  But extra time can be used in so many ways--some of these ways bring greater benefits than others.  If you'd like to make the most of an extra hour or two, the following are some great ideas to really maximize your time.  (And if you need another extra hour, there are ways of creating time in your schedule, also below.)

Enjoy your week, and connect with me on Facebook, Pinterest, and Twitter if you'd like more stress management resources throughout the week!

Cut Down On Your "Tolerations"
How many mildly stressful things are you tolerating on a regular basis?  How much energy is drained from you in small quantities, and how much do you think this adds up to?  (Many people underestimate the toll of their "tolerations.")  Imagine how an hour spent eliminating some of these little stressors (even one!) could help you in the long run.  Learn how to spot and eliminate your energy drains, and cut down on the stress they bring from now on.  Read More

Sleep!
Many people already enjoyed the "extra hour" as an extra hour of sleep, which makes a lot of sense.  Adequate sleep is a vital ingredient to a less-stressed existence, so if you're not getting enough on a regular basis, you may want to make plans to get an extra hour or two whenever possible.  Here are some ways to do that.  Read More

Write: Journaling, Creative Writing, Whatever Works!
If you're a creative person who seeks expression, November is a great month to spend an hour (or a daily hour) writing your thoughts and creating a novel--your first or your 20th!  (Don't worry, you don't need to publish it to have the activity itself be a great stress reliever.)  Or if you're not a creative type, using an hour to write in a gratitude journal or an emotion-focused journal can be a great stress relief activity as well.   See what a little writing can do for you.  Read More

How To Find An Extra Hour
If you don't live in a DST zone (or if you do, and simply want more time), there are things you can do to find more time in your schedule and get a few extra hours yourself.  You can simplify your life, or you can cut out specific activities based on your priorities.  Here's How.
