About

"The line moves on, but it never ends. All afternoon men keep coming round the hill and vanishing eventually over the horizon. It is one long tired line of antlike men," wrote Pulitzer Prize-winning WWII correspondent Ernie Pyle in 1943. Veterans are often remembered collectively, but many individual stories and lives after the war are tragically forgotten. Today is Veterans Day, and we want to honor all the heroes who defended and defend our country, teach our children to preserve their memory, list benefits available for veterans, and visit some memorial sites.

Remembering the Lives of Unknown Soldiers
The carved inscription on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier reads: "Beneath this stone/repose the bones of two thousand one hundred and eleven unknown soldiers... their remains could not be identified..." Every year hundreds of people visit the tombs of fallen veterans. Here we cover the history of Veterans Day and how we honor the living and the dead.

Recovering your Veteran Family's Memory
"I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth," wrote Tim O'Brien in "The Things They Carried." Nothing compels us more to remember the sacrifices and hardships of soldiers than reading or hearing their stories, even when they are dramatized in film and books. Here is a list of online veteran oral history collections.

Life After the Military
Sometimes a friend or good Samaritan can change a Veteran's life. In "Forrest Gump," Lieutenant Daniel Taylor is transformed from a worn and bitter alcoholic in a wheelchair to a dignified man who can stand up on his own again with titanium alloy prosthetic legs. Life as a veteran can be very difficult when you find yourself alone. Learn how to qualify for essential benefits here.

At the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow/Between the crosses, row on row,/That mark our place; and in the sky/The larks, still bravely singing, fly/Scarce heard amid the guns below." John McCrae's poem, written from the perspective of the dead, compels the living to carry their torch and persevere. Here is a list of places to commemorate the legacy of all veterans.
