About

So, you've finally decided you're ready to adopt a cat, huh? Meow! I mean, yay! June is Cat Adoption Month, so there's no better time to adopt a furry feline friend. Whether you're totally new to the cat adoption process or an old pro, we've got smart advice to help you find the perfect cat.

Finding a Good Shelter
You may be tempted to buy a cat or kitten from a pet store or breeder, but why not give a cat in serious need a good home? Not to mention, the ethical issues surrounding pet stores and backyard breeders—but we'll save that for another day. Local shelters, online adoption agencies and humane societies make it easy to find a wonderful pet, while championing a great cause.

Choosing the Right Cat for Your Family
Once you arrive at your local shelter or humane society, you'll probably want to bring all of the animals home with you. Narrowing your choices down to one awesome cat is going to be tough! Before you get to the shelter, you need to decide what will be best for your family: an older cat or a kitten? Which breed, if you have a choice? And what if someone in the family is allergic to cats? Having your family's needs figured out before you get to the shelter will make the process so much faster and stress-free.

Bringing Your Cat Home
Before you bring your new, furry family member home, make sure you and your house are totally prepared: learn how to cat-proof your house, stock up on all of the proper pet care supplies and set up a private space for kitty to call home. If you already have a cat, you'll want to slowly introduce her to the new cat on the block. Trust us—you don't want to deal with a major cat fight!

Caring for Your New Cat
Cats are pretty independent pets, but you still have to dedicate plenty of time and patience to their care; cats can't drive to the grocery store for more litter, you know. If you're new to cat ownership, read up on common mistakes new cat owners make (and how to avoid them) and the times when you should definitely call your cat's vet. Giving your cat the proper care, attention and love will make a happy, healthy, loving cat, and a strong kitty-human bond.
